About Temperature Conversions

Temperature scales do not share a zero point, so converting needs an offset as well as a ratio. Celsius to Fahrenheit is F = C x 9/5 + 32, Celsius to kelvin adds 273.15, the Rankine scale uses Fahrenheit-sized degrees counted from absolute zero, and the historical Reaumur scale puts the boiling point of water at 80 degrees. Water freezes at 0 C (32 F) and boils at 100 C (212 F) at sea-level pressure.
