Originally meaning "measuring rod," it was a fundamental surveying tool used by Roman land surveyors (agrimensores) for measuring fields and plotting land divisions. The term is the root of the English word "perch."

As a length unit, 3 barleycorns were equal to the Saxon ynce (inch). The English foot was actually defined as 12 of these ynces, that is, as 36 barleycorns.
